What's the situation with Working Age Benefits?
Working age benefits replace Childrens Tax Credits, Working Families Tax
Credits, The New Deals 50+, Disabled Persons Tax Credit and the monies paid in
income support for minors.
Working Tax Credit in a nutshell...
- This is paid to top up the earnings of people on a low income, irrespective of whether there are any children in the household.
- It replaces Working Families Tax Credit and Disabled Persons Tax Credit, but now also offers support to people who do not have children.
- People with children have to be 16 or over and working at least 16 hours a week to qualify.
- Those without children have to be at least 25 and working 30 hours or more a week.
- People with a disability may be able to claim at 16 whether they have children or not as long as they work for at least 16 hours a week.
- Those aged 50 or over need to be working 16 or more hours a week and would have to have received a qualifying benefit for 6 months prior to returning to work.
- Extra allowances will be given for any child with a disability
- Extra allowances can be given to cover up to 70% of eligible child care costs
- It will be paid trough a wage packet. However, the child care element will be paid to the main carer in the same way as the Child Tax Credit.
- When an award is made it will be for the whole tax year.
- Awards may be adjusted during the year to take account of changes in circumstances.
Child Tax Credits in a nutshell...
This replaces the Children’s Tax Credit and the child element in Income Support and Income Based Job Seekers Allowance. It is paid to people who are responsible for a child under 16 or a young person under 19 who is in full time education (up to A level /NVQ level 3) or registered with the Connexions or Careers Service
- It is paid whether you work or not.
- It is paid to the main carer of the child/young person.
- An allowance will be given for each child/young person.
- Families with any children under one will get an extra allowance.
- Extra allowances will also be given for children who get Disability Living Allowance or are register (or were registered within the last 28 weeks) as blind.
