(Keywords:
broadcasting, journalism, radio presenting, directing, producing)
There are so many sectors in the media industry one couldn't count on two hands how many possibilities there are for jobs in the media industry. There are always jobs at local, regional and national radio stations, whether the BBC or commercial. To hand, there is also a LOT of potential for new markets, niche's and promising projects funded by the government, the taxpayer and local charities to enable virtually anyone in the UK to become part of a creative team.
One of the biggest sectors in the media industry is Journalism. Whether for a newspaper, magazine or a website, there are articles, opinions, expressions, facts and figures published everyday whether through print or on the internet. Journalism jobs are always available, whether you wish to work actively for a newspaper or publishing company, or whether you wish to freely participate in article writing or publishing on the internet.
Another sector which is of most importance is Television. The BBC collects the funding annually through the Television License every household pays in the United Kingdom. This contributes towards the funding of programming, drama and creativity to develop and produce an 'end product' being the channels and their content to the whole of the UK. Other commercial companies which exist also compete with other rival channels and the BBC to again, create, produce and deliver drama, fiction, documentaries and other programming for a wide audience.
Radio Jobs are always in high demand because of the flexibility of the contracts
for radio presenting jobs. Some presenters can stay for quite a while with their
radio station, or their preferred slot, or some presenters like to float around
different radio stations in an aim to fit their target audience. In the radio
industry there are many other career prospects, some, unlike presenting, more
solid and geared towards a long-term career within the company, such as
producing shows, programme directing, marketing and much more.
Lots of radio stations are not just commercial these days, with the vast growth
of internet media, online radio stations are now springing up virtually
everywhere, so it's possible to gain experience by presenting a radio show from
your very own living room, add it to your CV and after a couple of years it
could soon amount to quite an impressive one.
always remember to record yourself, so that if you wish to approach another radio station for a presenting job, you can put together
sound bytes or a 'demo reel' so your potential employer can hear the work you've already done.
