For some competitive fields, a vocational postgraduate course can be the normal entry point into jobs, or can catapult you into higher level jobs in your field.
To see if a postgraduate qualification is particularly valued for the career you want to follow, check the entry requirements for that type of job on the following Prospects website database of graduate occupations.
For most other jobs, employers expect you to convince them of the benefits that your course could bring to them.
You must be able to articulate the benefits of your postgraduate study for applications and interviews. Enthusiasm for your subject is all very well - but if you can't explain how it has improved your employability, why should employers choose you over a good undergraduate, or someone with more work experience?
Where are the postgraduate jobs?
There may be more out there than you realise. Many employers who are interested in applications from Masters and taught postgraduates still only advertise their jobs as "graduate" jobs.
As a local example, an employer in the environmental sector advertised a graduate vacancy - but all those short listed for interview had postgraduate qualifications.
What have other Masters / taught postgraduates gone on to do?
Each year, universities carry out a national survey of what UK graduates and postgraduates are doing, six months after graduating. Although many graduates take longer than this to get into their "career" job, it gives an indication of where people start out. See the national summary for postgraduates at the Prospects website: What do postgraduates do?
