Job Centre Plus - Semi Skilled Driving Jobs

car mechanic working on a customers car

Part Time / Full Time / Skilled / Semi Skilled Mechanics
(Keywords: mechanics,semi skilled,skilled,driving jobs)

Car Mechanics inspect cars, service cars and repair the brakes, engines, tyres, exhausts and many other car parts for cars, buses, trucks, lorries and other automotive vehicles.

Analyzing, detecting and diagnosing faults within a car's structure is not an easy task for the untrained eye and a brain that has no knowledge of the current model of car. On the flip side of that, many car mechanics alike tend to find the 'hard-to-find' problems in a car are the most rewarding and challenging duties they hold.

Some mechanics usually work on a specialised subject, such as transmission, eletrics and steering for example, and the cars are usually worked on in workshops. Other car mechanics however, those with extensive knowledge and a plethora of experience can work in a vast amount of different area's of a car, including the car as a whole.

To be recognised as a Master Automobile Technician (MAT) as a car mechanic you must be registered and certified to work in every single aspect of a car, bus, truck or lorry.

Most car mechanics full time, will usually spend between 40-50 hours of work, sometimes longer hours the busier the workshops are. With Bus Mechanics this is usually the same concept, but with more flexible hours being offered, as bus depots seem to hold larger quantities of staff, especially Bus Mechanics.

Wages can vary quite widely. Again, it's all about what type of company you work for. If you work for a local garage, expect varied pay rises throughout the year, or even once a year. With a larger company you usually have set periods for a pay rise. The median pay for a mechanic is around 18-25k per year, but some mechanics can earn a lot more than this, again it's all about experience and the type of company you work for.

Working for a local garage is typically no different from working in a mainstream car dealing garage. With less staff you will usually get work done more efficiently because you will take on more roles in getting jobs done.

Most Car Mechanics today, gain valuable experience from college and immeasurable experience from "On-The-Job Training".

Interview Tip
The best way to learn, especially being a mechanic is to study, listen and remember! Study the vast models of cars, listen to those with the experience and try to
remember almost everything you pick up on the job. It could prove to be valuable information in the future.
